The opening of exposition School Report Card was held online as part of the Exhibit of the Month project on August 25, 2022 at 12.00.

The museum's funds contain many personal documents handed over by the townspeople. Among them, there are often school report cards from different cities and time periods.

Unfortunately, the first report card, issued by the school Samarkand settlement, the future Temirtau city, has not been preserved. The oldest report card was: “The knowledge assessment sheet and behavior of the 1st “B” class pupil - Zhernova Natasha of secondary school No. 13 of the Temirtau city for the 1960-1961 academic year”. Today it has become the unifying center of the exposition.

A variety of documents in one area always arouses research interest, raises questions and requires answers.

In the statement issued by the Temirtau school No. 13, the marks are given in the form of points. At the same time, in the report cards of the 1935-1937s, the grades were affixed in the form of the words “good” and “excellent”. Documents from the 1950s and 1960s often already have a double score in the form of a score and its verbal interpretation. The question naturally arises, how did the rating system develop?

The Kazakh school, being part of the Russian Empire, has experienced a 3-, 5-, 8-, 10-, 12-point system for assessing knowledge. In the second quarter of the 19th century, the system familiar to today was approved, where "1" - weak successes, and "5" - excellent. Soviet education legalized and used only a 5-point system: first in the form of verbal assessments, and since 1944 in the form of points.

The list of school disciplines in Natasha Zhernova's statement raises new questions:what kind of subject is calligraphy? Why "arithmetic" and not "mathematics"?

Before the widespread use of ballpoint pens, all first graders were taught calligraphy. Drawing letters with a metal pen and ink is not an easy task.

Previously, in the first grade, they taught only simple operations with numbers, that is, arithmetic. Teaching mathematics also implies the study of geometric shapes, units of measurement and equations with unknowns.

School report cards and records often seem boring. It would seem that there could be something interesting in the list of disciplines and grades? But an inquisitive mind can discern the history of the development of the education sector behind the dry lines.
